Sake meets cheese, German wines meet Thai food, and I meet my credit limit
Badum-ching. Here's this week in food events I have been talking about
I have to say, this week's lineup reads like NYC threw all its cultural influences into a blender and hit the "surprise me" button. We’ve got a sake and cheese pairing class, German wines at a Thai restaurant, tuna cutting shows with DJ sets…
Only in New York could this eclectic mix feel completely logical.
This is the joy of living here - the food scene is always surprising you and teaching you something new. At least that’s how I see it. It's beautiful chaos that somehow makes perfect sense.
Anyway, let’s hop to it. Time to rally the troops and make some moves.
POP UP WATCH — Events worth your time (ticketed)
TONCHIN "BEST FRIENDS" SAKE LAUNCH PARTY | June 19 (via Resy). My favorite type of dining event: the launch party. When a ramen spot teams up with Brooklyn Kura to launch a collaboration sake, you show up. When they add a tuna cutting show and DJ set to the mix, you bring friends. $50 gets food, drinks, and a court-side view of expert tuna slicing. Go!
SAKE & CHEESE TASTING @ BROOKLYN KURA | June 21 (tickets here). If you can’t make the sake launch party, fear not. Here's your chance to become that person who actually knows what they're talking about when they say "umami." Five craft sakes, five cheese varieties, plus a brewery tour where the sake is made. Perfect for impressing dates or just expanding your palate beyond the usual suspects.
THE NOORTWYCK PFALZ DINNER | June 23 (via Resy). Oskar Micheletti of von Winning is bringing 160 years of German winemaking history to Noortwyck. Twelve wines across four courses, including Grosses Gewächs that'll make you sound very smart at dinner parties. At $175, it's an education in German wines that goes way beyond your typical Riesling. Plus, communal seating means you'll leave with new wine friends! And we can always use more of those :)
EXPENSE ACCOUNT — One especially swanky event
BANGKOK SUPPER CLUB x SELBACH-OSTER | June 23 (via Resy). I’m quite partial to this event because this is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I went to a similar event last fall and boy does this team know how to pair German wines with their menu. You’ll get five courses paired with rare Mosel wines, complete with "poetic tasting notes" because we're fancy like that. At $250 per person, this is the move when you need to impress clients or just treat yourself to world-class German wine craftsmanship. And pandan cake, of course.
NO RESERVATIONS — Pop ups, tastings, & block parties you can walk straight into
STEAK NIGHT @ THE YORK | East Village | June 18 (info here) Sometimes you just need a flat iron with chimichurri and hand-cut fries for $29. The team from Steak Night NY will be posting up at this rustic pub and throwing down steaks all night. Plus salad with massaged kale if you're feeling healthy, key lime meringue if you're not. 6-11pm, no fuss, just good steak.
WINE DOWN WEDNESDAYS @ THE STANDARD | Meatpacking | June 18 (via Resy) This week, Williamsburg’s Sauced is taking over The Standard Plaza's speakers and your Wednesday night plans. Natural wines, vinyl sets, and "low-lit mischief" from 7-10pm this time in Manhattan. Head to the link to reserve a spot or try your luck with first come, first serve on tables.
MIDSOMMAR PARTY @ KABIN | West Village | June 20 (via Resy) I’m still reeling from seeing Midsommar a few years ago but I think I can make an exception for this party. Swedish pop (think ABBA), flower crowns, and meatballs at 9pm in Hudson Square. Bring your vänner (that's Swedish for friends) and lean into the Scandinavian chaos.
THIS WEEK'S PRIME SCORE — Deal I found on Blackbird* and am taking advantage of this week
Fish Cheeks Brooklyn | Williamsburg | Raw marinated crab on the house
Fish Cheeks going live on Blackbird means free raw marinated crab for the taking. Check in with Blackbird at the door, order an entree, and a plate of comped crustaceans will be sent your way.
* I am not affiliated with Blackbird. If you want in, get $20 to burn at over 500 restaurants in NYC here!
That’s all from me folks! Happy hunting :)
