Run clubs meet their match, oompah bands, and one spot left at Sixty Three Clinton
This week in food events I have been talking about
The end of May is absolutely refusing to let up and I'm not mad about it.
We've got run clubs getting schooled by a Chelsea wine shop that just added booze to cardio (the audacity!), a James Beard nominee bringing two-Michelin-star SF magic to Pier 57, and focaccia-and-beer combinations that’ll cure your Sunday scaries. Plus, there's a German beer party this weekend that requires zero knowledge of German but maximum enthusiasm for giant mugs. Huzzah!
For those keeping their wallets on a diet, I've spotted some moves that won't require selling a kidney. Check those out in the bottom of this dispatch!
Let's dive in.
POP UP WATCH — Events worth your time (ticketed)
JAPANESE WINE TASTING @ SIXTY THREE CLINTON | May 28 (via Resy). To me, this event is the crown jewel of this week’s dispatch, but of course I’m biased. Killer restaurant and killer programming for the night. The snag is that there’s only one seat left, which means this is either going to be you or someone faster than you. Mie Ikeno, the Japanese winemaker who studied in Burgundy and makes only 800 cases a year, is gracing LES with a seven-course dinner featuring her Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir from Yamanashi. If you’re feeling fancy and ready to dine solo, $240 gets you six wines, seven courses, and bragging rights about drinking wine that most people will never taste.
JAMES BEARD EVENT @ PIER 57 | May 29 (via James Beard). James Beard Award nominee Richard Lee is bringing his two-Michelin-star Saison magic from San Francisco to NYC for one night. The man who helped Eleven Madison Park hit #1 on World's 50 Best is serving up Northern California's seasonal cuisine. Counter seats from $165, dining tables at $190. If you've ever wondered what all the SF food hype is about without the cross-country flight, here's your shot.
NEW ENGLAND ITALIAN @ CAFE MARS | May 31-June 1 (via OpenTable). This week Cafe Mars is celebrating the Italian-American cuisine of Connecticut and Rhode Island—the states with the highest Italian descent rates in the country. Five courses of Italian-American cooking from the region for $75. If you grew up with this food, prepare for nostalgia. If you didn't, prepare to understand what you've been missing. Grab a table!
THE GREEK TRIBECA FAREWELL PARTY | May 31 (via Tock) After 12 years, The Greek is saying goodbye to their Tribeca location with the kind of party that legends are made of. $103 gets you buffet-style food, drinks, DJ, and all the feels. This is your last chance to experience this institution in its original form!
NO RESERVATIONS — Pop ups, tastings, & block parties you can walk straight into
GERMAN BEER SPRINGFEST @ BLACK FOREST BROOKLYN | May 31 (via Resy) Oft overlooked, Springfest is basically Oktoberfest in May. To celebrate, this Saturday Black Forest is going full Bavarian with a live oompah band, mug-holding contests, and the kind of beer portions that require commitment. Epic. $10 gets you in, $50 gets you three hours of unlimited beer (pace yourself). Lederhosen optional but encouraged!
FOCACCIA POP-UP @ TALEA WEST VILLAGE | June 1 (more info here) The Sunday scaries cure you actually want: bread and beer. Gotcha Focaccia is popping up at NYC beer heavyweight Talea from 1-4pm at 102 Christopher St. Sounds like an incredibly fulfilling event and as a lover of focaccia, they’ve got my attention.
SPIRITED RUNNERS 5K @ COMMUNITY WINE | June 2 (via Community) Run clubs, consider this your official notice that you've been one-upped. Join Community Wine in Chelsea for a 5K run along the Hudson followed by a wine tasting. Come settle the science on whether post-cardio vino is bad for you (ahem…might already be settled alas)! 7pm start!
